High School was a time of constant change and upheaval. Between changing schools, extracurriculars, athletics, volunteering, and taking care of my little brother, I had no time to spare. My mom would be at work before I woke up for school, and wouldn’t come home until late that night. Balancing everything took planning and sticking to a schedule. Everyday had an agenda to make sure my brother and I didn’t fall behind.
There would be days that I wouldn’t want to go to school, or bringing my little brother home so he didn’t have to sit through a theatre or track practice was enticing. I realized avoiding the obligations did not make anything easier. It was so much better in the long run if I planned out the days and pushed through to complete them.
Having so much on my plate at the time allowed me to learn the importance of flexible organization. Everyday would be planned out, but as I knew that nothing goes perfectly as planned. So as different events or problems came up, I would alter the plan and make it all work out at the end of the day. Coming to college I was prepared with a sense of personal autonomy and responsibility that has allowed me to manage myself, time, and responsibilities.
