I have a weird but seemingly harmless practice that I have done since I was little.
I like to check and see if doors are unlocked. Whether it be just walking down a hallway
or outside a building, I check to see if certain unmarked doors are open. When I find an open door, it is usually a janitorial closet, stairwell, or industrial room.
One time I was walking passed our storage shed outside of our sorority house and decided to check and see if it was locked. I walked up and turned the knob. I was in. There were boxes and boxes of old PR items, T-shirts, Cups, and all things with my sorority letters on it. No one saw me go in, no one would notice them missing, no one would even really care if I took some. My mind thought through the scenario. Technically these items were purchased with my money through the dues I pay to the chapter. I am an upperclassman who has been there as long as the items have and they were not being used for years.
I would give a couple T-shirts, cups, and hats a loving warm home where they could be appreciated instead of a cold shed outside the house. I realized my heart was starting to elevate in speed. The turning point for me, as it is for my other ethical dilemmas is, would I be proud of or care if people knew what I was doing? If so, I needed to stop. I walked out of the shed and felt good about my decision.
