This fall of 2017 was extremely busy for the new member team and I.
I am on a team that facilitates the education and onboarding for the new members
of our organization. We had to match every new member with a mentor. We could not
meet in person to discuss matching and preferences, so we had to use technology to
communicate.
At first, it was a mess. We gave a preference survey for the mentors and mentees to
preference which person they would like. We could not match everyone perfectly, but we created a
system so that we could be the most efficient. There were two different google docs and a group chat that we used to communicate and refer to before making final decisions. We decided to make the perfect matches first and then use their preference information and bios to help.
I had to let others make decisions that would affect these new members in the near and foreseeable future. These matches, if matched well, can be held dear for years and most are in each others weddings and keep in touch for life. I did not want to be rash or mess anything up so it was hard for me to let go and let the other members make decisions. I would wonder if they had all of the information to make certain decisions, but ultimately I trusted them to do the right thing. Through this process I have learned how to trust others in a team. You will never know someones capabilities unless you let them show you
