SOCIAL IMPACT MINDSET

 

The imprint that I leave on the world I live in.

           At my job I have social impact on the town I live in. I work at a local low-income area high school. I am a mentor who helps prepare the students for the next step after school or the next school they will go to. I put my time into the students so that they can have a better chance at opportunities. When working with students my favorite part is watching them light up with excitement for what lies ahead when I describe the many options ahead of them.

           One student came in for a quick question on the SAT. I asked her what colleges she knew of and she seemed a little lost and so we dug in. I was able to show her that her options for going to college were beyond what she thought. It was so encouraging to me to see her light up with excitement over her future. We researched her major, filled out the FAFSA, looked at different programs, and got her set up with testing materials. We ended up taking a couple of hours discussing her future and I felt that I really helped developed her future.

           During this last semester I have done a lot of soul searching to find something that I enjoy doing that is also sustaining my life. I have found that helping others figure out what they want to do next, may be MY next step. My goal is to give out as much as I have gained. Helping others find their way by walking through the way I process things made me realize how much I enjoy being a mentor and counselor. I am so much more aware of how I can reach out and help others, and hope to make a career from it.
